God, the Big Bang, & Evolution: Can we believe in all three?
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? (Psalm 8:3-4)
On the evening of Thursday, 18 March, the Central London church gathered with friends, co-workers and people met on the streets to hear Rob Payne give a lecture on God and Science. It was fantastic! Rob graduated from Imperial College with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and has since worked as both a Christian minister and a Physics lecturer. He has the rare skill of turning complicated topics into interesting and understandable bits of information that we can discuss.
First he took us through the history of the Religion and Science debate: can they get along? After showing that the two can (and should) be integrated, he moved on to show how science has shown evidence for a designer of the universe, a "fine tuner" of the cosmos. Then we moved on from the galactic to the microscopic, showing the complexity of DNA and other elements of evolution. It was all absolutely fascinating, especially hearing the opinions of well respected sciences who have come to belief in a Creator after observing the evidence.
After the presentation and a time of Q&A, we left the Seven Dials Club with our faith in God strengthened. The attendance at our following church service was higher than average, and we can owe that to people's eagerness to learn more. We are very grateful to Rob and his efforts, and we hope that he will come back and teach us again. And to the Creator, God the Father, be all the glory!
